Women of Wolt – Antonija, product designer

Antonija-BW.jpeg

To celebrate International Women’s Day, this interview series highlights some of the women who make Wolt, well – Wolt. The series includes Wolt staff, restaurant partners and couriers partners.

In this post, we’re introducing Antonija, who is the Product Designer in the Growth Team, based in Wolt’s HQ in Helsinki, Finland.

What is your story?

I’m from Croatia, where I studied to become a fashion designer. I actually never wanted to work as a fashion designer, but I wanted to pursue design and there were limited options for “artsy” colleges. So, I studied fashion, and I also educated myself on the side, doing projects in product and app design. With Wolt, it all started four years ago when I moved to Finland. I worked at a couple of startups here and joined Wolt recently.

What do you do at Wolt?

I’m a product designer on the growth team. We own several projects across the company, and I work on apps that consumers use, as well as internal tools. Sometimes I even touch wolt.com with some design changes. So, I get to work on a very wide range of projects, which I enjoy. To sum it up, the point of my work is to detect “low hanging fruit” and improve the customer experience through better design. We also look at data and numbers to help us improve Wolt in an impactful way.

How long have you been at Wolt?

For seven months now.

What got you to join Wolt?

I met one of the founders of Wolt a few years ago, and stayed informed about how the company was doing. I’ve also been a customer of Wolt’s, and a frequent user of the app for a long time now.

Before I joined my previous company, I was looking for opportunities to work in bigger teams. I was invited to the recruitment process at Wolt, but ended up declining back then, as I had accepted another job offer. Once I ended my two years at the previous company, I got a ping from Wolt’s recruitment team, and the timing was right for me to move on. I saw Wolt as such a cool opportunity, and made the career jump during the coronavirus pandemic.

What’s the best part of your work?

My team. I get to work with knowledgeable and skilled people, powered by great synergy. It’s also cool and kinda crazy that my work impacts millions of people through our apps. It’s wild to see your designs used by millions of people in 23 countries.

What advice would you give to anyone considering joining Wolt?

Like the Nike slogan says it, just to do it.

Anything you’d like us to mention with regard to International Women’s Day, being a woman in your industry or at Wolt?

I have a long history working in startups and IT teams. I really wish to see more women in the teams. I’ve mainly always only worked with guys, and it would be nice to see more ladies in tech. So, to all the women who are reading this, try it out, and continue pushing through. It can be challenging at times, as we do face bias, but we should persist and pursue careers in tech.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge (quoting IWD website): “We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”

If you want to support the cause, post a photo of your hand raised with the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge and take action to call out inequality – not only today, but every day as well.
